If my brain is such a sophisticated hunk of neurons, how come I can’t just recall stuff like a cheap hard drive?
Clearly there are times when a hard drive works a lot better.
It helps to know how memories are accumulated to better understand why sometimes you can remember your first high school date and why [...]

Ever wondered how various parts of your brain work together to make decisions?
Scientists at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) released a study in 1994 which identified the parts of the brain that are used in complex problem solving.
There is a processing network that is distributed throughout the brain, according to Dr. [...]

If that’s true then help me find the other 90%.
Or maybe that’s a myth.
This is an idea that goes back to early 1800’s, often promoted by the phrenologists who thought that specific human behaviors and characteristics could be deduced by the pattern and size of bumps on the skull.
This was a hotly debated topic: some [...]

This sounds like a myth.
During the cold war the Russians extensively studied a herb called rhodiola rosea, according to a Science News article.
And this story reads like a cold war spy novel.
Rhodiola grows at high altitudes from Scandinavia to Siberia, and for centuries has been a part of folk medicine among diverse native groups.
Documented [...]

Good for your health and your brain.
Magnesium, a mineral in your body, is essential to good health, according to the government Office Of Dietary Supplements.
And it’s got some cognitive benefits too.
(Note: Who knew there is a government agency for supplements? Part of the National Institutes of Health. And it’s pretty darned good [...]
It’s not the same old song. Or neuron either.

Adult male canaries develop new songs every season.
That fact may not seem terribly exciting to most people but it is.
Why?
Because scientists at the Picower Institute believe that it’s an example of “neurogenesis,” the ability of certain species (including us) to grow new brain cells in adulthood.
Neurons – these are the cells in the nervous system [...]

Here’s a diet your brain will like:
Breakfast: Two eggs sunny side up because they contain cloline which will improve your memory and reduce fatigue. (OK, not every day because the cholesterol will get you.)
Lunch: Sushi, because fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help to refresh brain cell membranes.
Dinner: Some low fat protein [...]

Does it seem that they tend to be mostly males?
A recent study by Stanford University School of Medicine researchers shows that the part of the brain that generates rewarding feelings is more activated in men than women during video-game play.
This explains a lot.
The senior author of the study, Allan Reiss, MD, studies gender differences. He [...]
